Charles Bentz

Mr. Charles William Bentz,84, of Thurmont, went to his eternal home in Heaven on Sunday, August 26, 2012 while surrounded by his loving family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was the loving husband of 64 years to Beatrice Virginia Stitely Bentz.

Born May 22, 1928  in Graceham, he was the son of the late Charles B. Bentz and Helen E. Groshon Bentz. Charles graduated from Thurmont High School in the Class of 1946. He served his country in the United States Army in the Korean War from January 1952 until July 1953 with the 45th Infantry Division 461st Transportation Company (Amphibious Truck) out of Fort Story, Virginia. He served the remainder of his term in the U.S. Army Reserves until his Honorable Discharge in January 1960.

After returning home from his service in Korea, he worked for Moore Business Forms in Thurmont for 36-1/2 years until his retirement in 1990.

Charles was an Honorary Life Member of the Guardian Hose Company in Thurmont where he served on the Board of Trustees, helped with the annual fireman's carnivals and bingo and was a driver. He was a life member of Graceham Moravian Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, served as Head Usher, a Diener, helped with the turkey and oyster suppers, and was a grounds keeper. He also was a member of the Edwin C. Creager Post #168 of Thurmont.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Laura Harbaugh and husband, Rodney, of Rocky Ridge; Carol Ann Minnick and husband, Joe, of Thurmont; Thomas Bentz and wife, JoAnn, of Thurmont; and Timothy Bentz, also of Thurmont; his grandchildren, Jennifer Harbaugh, Michelle Harbaugh, and Shannon Glass and husband, Mark, all of Rocky Ridge; Sadah Bentz and friend, Gab, of Idaho; Joshua Bentz, and wife, Annie; and Rebecca Lee and husband, Anthony Lee, all of Thurmont; and Chelsea Minnnick and fiancee', Jimmy Hines of Woodsboro. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Jonathan Sweeney, Bradley Richards, Paige Sweeney, Trey and Chloe Glass, Andi Grace and Gabriel Bentz, Brynn and Rehgan Lee, and Austin Hines; his brothers, James B. Bentz and wife, Louise, and Raymond E. Bentz and wife, Rosie, all of Thurmont; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

Charles also will be remembered by his special friend and Army buddy, George Wills and his family of Baltimore.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dulcie M. Biser.

A memorial service to honor Charles' life will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at  Graceham Moravian Church, 8231-A Rocky Ridge Road, Thurmont, where his family will receive friends from 10 until 11. Officiating will be Pastor Sue Koenig.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that memorial donations in honor of Charles by be made to Graceham Moravian Church, 8231-A Rocky Ridge Road, Thurmont, MD 21788; Guardian Hose Company, 21 N. Church Street, Thurmont, MD 21788; or to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Arrangements are being handled by Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, and Stauffer Crematory, Inc. of Frederick.
