Mr. Charles P. “Jim” Barger, 81 of Ijamsville died on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Jane B. Barger.
Born on January 6, 1932 in Ednor, MD, he was the son of the late Oliver and Myrtle Barger.
Jim began his long career in banking in 1949 with Suburban National Bank in Silver Spring, MD. He worked in branch banking with Suburban Trust Company and Suburban Bank in Montgomery County and ended his 42 year association with this bank in 1991, retiring as a Sr. Vice President and Regional Commercial Loan Officer.
Active in many community and banking associations during his long career, Jim joined the Board of Washington Adventist Hospital in 1977 and also the Board of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in 1979. As a member of the Adventist HealthCare (AHC) Board of Trustees, Jim served as Chair of the Finance Committee and continued as an active member of the Finance Committee as a Director Emeritus.
Raised in the country, Jim rode his pony over the Sandy Spring/Olney area as a kid which led to his love of horses and foxhunting. He was a lifelong member of Goshen Hunt, riding as a Whip alongside his old friend, Huntsman Frank Fraley, for many years. After a serious foxhunting accident in 1996, he continued the ‘chase’ by hill topping in his red GMC Jimmy.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children Judy Rose Seibert of Silver Spring, Sharon L. Wittmann of Dallas, TX, Debby Barger Heyes and husband Andrew of Owings, MD, and Charles P. Barger Jr. of Martinsburg, WV; step children Jeannie Topper and husband Sam of Emmitsburg, Carey Phelps Staley and husband Don of New Market and Robert F. Phelps Jr. and wife Diane of Milton, FL; 13 grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 1307 North Main Street, Mt. Airy, MD 21771. The Reverend Portia R. Hirshman will officiate. Inurnment will be in the St. James’ Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be made to the above named church.
