September 9, 1917 — August 23, 2008

Catherine Kay Voiles, 90, a medical technologist and great-grandmother, died Aug. 23 of congestive heart failure at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Maryland.

Mrs. Voiles was born Catherine Brown Davis on September 9, 1917, the eldest of three daughters of Aubrey G. and Ursula B. Davis. She spent her childhood on the family dairy farm near Monrovia in southern Frederick County. With her sisters Cora Lee and Audrey, and many relatives on nearby farms, Kay raised calves for show and attended a local one-room schoolhouse before graduating from Frederick High School in 1934.

After graduation, Kay moved to Washington, DC, and began a career as a medical technologist. She married Pvt. Wilfred D. Warner (USA) in 1936. One child, Joseph Patrick Warner, was born to them in 1937. The marriage ended in divorce in 1949.

Kay married Horace Voiles of Indiana in Washington, DC, in 1955. They lived for many years in Washington, where Kay held memberships in American Society for Medical Technology and the District of Columbia Society of Medical Technologists. They attended nearby St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Washington. After retiring from her work as a supervisor and teacher at Washington Hospital Center in 1979, she and Horace traveled extensively, often aboard the liner SS Queen Elizabeth II. Mr. Voiles died in 1983.

Kay lived in Washington until 2006, visiting friends and taking frequent trips in the United States as well as Greece, France, Ireland, and Morocco with the Travel Club. She spent her last two years with living with family in Maryland.

Catherine Voiles is survived by her sister, Cora Lee Winchester of Rockville, Maryland, her son, Joseph P. Warner, two grandsons, Michael (Dorothy) and Steven; and four great-grandchildren: Thomas, Charles, Anne, and Christopher; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Audrey Watkins, in 1982.
