Catherine McRae

June 15, 1956 — January 15, 2018

Catherine “Katy” Theresa McRae (nee O’Reilly) of Frederick, Maryland passed away on January 15, 2018 as a result of complications from metastatic breast cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen McRae, daughter Emily and son-in-law Anthony, son Donal and daughter-in-law Hayley, son Ian and daughter-in-law Dede, son Conor, and siblings, Breda, Tony, Anne, Ebbie, Bill, Jack, Bunny and Terry. She was predeceased by her parents Edmund and Mary, her siblings Molly, Vinny, and Aidan, and her in-laws, Taylor and Ruth.

Katy was from Ballypatrick, Ireland and travelled widely before settling happily in Spring Ridge, Frederick in 2006. While she originally trained as a radiologist, she later worked as a document control specialist and volunteered as an adult literacy teacher.

She was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) in 2009 and faced all the challenges of her illness with courage and grace. She was active with the MBC charity METAvivor and raised over $40,000 for MBC research, as well as advocating for increased awareness of metastatic dangers.

In lieu of flowers and in the spirit of her life, donations may be made to METAvivor, 1783 Forest Drive #184, Annapolis, MD 21401.

The family will receive friends to celebrate Katy’s life at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Sunday, January 21st from 1:00-3:00pm. Her final internment will be in Ballypatrick, Ireland later this summer.

The family would like to express their thanks to doctors, nurses and all the staff of James M. Stockman Cancer Institute and Frederick Memorial Hospital, particularly the nurses of Ward 2C.

Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.staufferfuneralhome.com
