Catherine McCauley

February 20, 1915 — July 23, 2016

Catherine Ella (Shafer) McCauley, 101, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the Golden Living Center in Hagerstown.

Born on February 20, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward Shafer, Sr. and Ethel Florine (Staley) Shafer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Frushour McCauley, in 1975; her daughter, Dorothy J. Spessard, in 2011; one sister, Esther Beckley; two brothers, Charles E. Shafer, Jr. and Staley Shafer; and one great grandson, Frank Thompson.

Catherine had formerly attended Salem Reformed Church in Cearfoss.

Catherine will always be remembered for her shredded coconut. She would go to Baltimore to get coconuts and she offered it for sale at the City Market in Hagerstown and also from her home. She used a shredder that her husband had manufactured, and that shredder is currently on display at the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Lisa J. Thompson, of Hagerstown; her great grandson, Shane Thompson, of Hagerstown; three great-great granddaughters, Heidi, Heather and Brooke Thompson; and one great-great-great grandson, Tyson.

A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. Pastor Steve Wagner will officiate. Interment will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday, July 25, 2016 at the funeral home.
