Carolyn Anderson

May 10, 1925 — December 11, 2014

Carolyn Dewey Anderson, 89, quietly passed away, December 11, 2014, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland.  In her last week she was surrounded by her children and grandsons.  Born May 10, 1925, in Granby, Connecticut, the daughter of Anna Brooks Dewey and Leroy Gaines Dewey, Sr.  She was raised in the bucolic farming community of West Granby, a place that she held close to her heart.

Carolyn graduated Simsbury High School in 1943.  She married Carl Oscar Anderson, December 28, 1957.  He predeceased her on July 31, 1993.  She was a resident of Somers for more than 30 years, where she volunteered for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the Somers Congregational Church.  Carolyn was also very active in town politics, and served as Registrar of Voters for many years.

Her professional career was as a book keeper and executive secretary.  Among her employers were Ensign Bickford, Simsbury, Connecticut; Friendly Ice Cream, Wilbraham, Massachusetts; and Conval, Somers, Connecticut.

She is survived by her children: Carl Douglas Anderson and wife, Ann Zeleny, of Boonsboro, Maryland; Curtice Nancy Engelman of Friedens, Pennsylvania; and Carolyn Barbara Alminde and husband, Russell, of Berlin, Massachusetts.  She is survived by grandchildren, Fred Zeleny of San Francisco, California; Gwyneth Anderson of Chicago, Illinois; Tobin Richardson of Boswell, Pennsylvania; Dylan Engelman of West Palm Beach, Florida; and Olivia Alminde of Berlin, Massachusetts; and great-grandson, Ian Alexander Richardson.  She was predeceased by her youngest son, Charles Dana Anderson, May 2004; and her grandson, Ian Tosh Engelman, May 2005.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at the West Granby United Methodist Church, 87 Simsbury Road, West Granby, Connecticut, 06090.  She would not want us mourning her death during this joyous season, but celebrating the transition of her journey.  In lieu of flowers, donations for the care of the Dewey Oak Tree, an important part of the Dewey history, can be sent to Granby Land Trust, P.O. Box 23, Granby, Connecticut, 06035.
