Carol Marie Cornell

December 24, 1947 — May 31, 2023

Ijamnsville

Mrs. Carol Marie Cornell, age 75, of Ijamsville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 31st, 2023, following a courageous fight against pancreatic cancer.  She was the wife of the late David Howard Cornell, who passed away on October 2, 2017.   They were married for 48 years. Born on December 24, 1947, in Frederick Maryland, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Flora (Fleming) Richard.

Carol was raised in Watersville, Maryland and graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1966.  Following her high school graduation, she worked for Geico Insurance Company.  It was at that time, Carol stayed home to raise her two sons, Russell and Chad.  As her children entered their school years, she worked at Kemptown Elementary School in the cafeteria.  Following her employment at Kemptown Elementary School, she found her calling of working with children and worked for nearly the next 30 years in day care in the Monrovia area.  To her toddlers and their families, she was known as “Mrs. Carol”. She adored each child as if they were her own and treasured the relationships she built with their families.  She also enjoyed the time she spent serving as a Cub Scout leader. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling at Mount Airy Lanes and participated in several bowling leagues.

Carol had a zest for life and spread joy each day to everyone she encountered.  She dearly loved her family, friends, and neighbors. Carol had many interests including going to the beach and spending time at her mountain home in Virginia.  She loved all creatures, big and small.  She never missed a day making sure all birds, squirrels, and wildlife were well fed. Carol had a “green thumb” and talent for growing beautiful plants and flowers, inside and outside of her home. Carol also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cooking, and gardening.

Carol is survived by her sons, Russell L. Cornell and wife, Angela of Wolfsville, Maryland and Chad T. Cornell, and wife, Christi of Ocala, Florida. She is also survived by her five grandchildren Sophia Lethbridge, and husband, Collins, Jonathan Cornell, Jack Cornell, Conner Cornell and Chloe Cornell. Carol is also survived by her aunts Anna Rhae Fleming, Nellie Brown, and Dorothy Bowman. She also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and dear family friends who were very special to her.  Carol and her family are filled with gratitude for her neighbors, Carol and Lance Jordan and Amy and Luke Pearson who were there to assist with anything she needed following her diagnosis and illness.

In addition to her parents and husband, Carol was predeceased by her brothers Edgar “Tucker” Richard, John Richard, and her sister, Darlene Schrider. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Carol and her family are so grateful to all of the staff at Frederick Health Hospice, especially Melissa and Anna. Their support, expertise, and compassionate care provided to Carol and the family during this difficult time, will never be forgotten.

Friends and family will be received on Saturday, June 10, 2023, from 10:00am-11:00am, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00am at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, 11301 Meeting House Road, Myersville, Maryland 21773.  Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carol’s honor to Frederick Health Hospice, 1 Frederick Health Way, Frederick, Maryland 21701 or to Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, PO Box 575, Myersville, Maryland 21773.
