Carlos Puig

Carlos Manuel Puig, 84, of Guantanamo, Cuba, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He had a great love for Frederick, MD and chose to retire and make Frederick his home for the past 10 years. He was the husband of Margarita Puig.

Carlos was born on March 20, 1933, in Guantanamo, Cuba and was the son of the late Arturo and Daysi Puig. Carlos felt it a great privilege to start his professional working years on the US Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GTMO) as a Cuban commuter. He was later granted the access to live permanently on the naval base with his family. Two of his most memorable work experiences included managing a restaurant for the Navy Exchange and then serving as a Supply Technician for the Department of Defense. He and his family enjoyed the many years they were able to spend in GTMO prior to coming stateside.

Carlos was an avid baseball fan. He spent most of his days from March-October attending and later watching baseball games on television. He was a loyal Cubs fan and he was thrilled to witness his team win a world series, in his lifetime. During the off-baseball season, he loved to watch the news in Spanish and English and was always quick to call his daughter and report the latest happenings.

He had a life-long love affair with paella, arroz con pollo, ropa vieja, picadillo and plantains, Margarita's chicken soup, cream of wheat, oatmeal, ice cream, Klondike bars and all desserts.

He took extreme pride in his granddaughter, Natalie of Frederick for whom he would at times share his opinion on her fashion and hair styles. He took fashion cues from no one. In his younger years, he was a sharp dresser. In retirement, his signature every day look was all his: blue jeans, white t-shirt designed by the fashion house Fruit of the Loom, and neutral colored sweatshirts sold exclusively at Walmart.

In addition to his loving and devoted wife, he is survived by his daughter, Barbara Puig Cook, with whom he and Margarita resided, granddaughter Natalie Cook and many loving aunts, uncles and extended family. Carlos was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughter, granddaughter, Oliver and Coqui the dogs and close friends.

Because of his fear that his daughter would throw him a themed, elaborate funeral,  his family will host a private, family and close friends only celebration of his life, free of any type of 'theme.'

In lieu of flowers or food deliveries to the home, the family asks that in honor of Carlos memorial donations be made to St. Judes Childrens Hospital or the charity of choice.

Carlos will be dearly missed by his family and close friends.
