Carl Settle

Carl Benjamin Settle , 87, of Williamsport, Maryland, passed from this life on Friday, December 20, 2013 at Homewood at Williamsport Retirement Center. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cecilia Elaine (Hurley) Settle, who died June 24, 1999.

Born on April 1, 1926 in the District of Columbia, he was the son of the late Frederick Greenlaw and Gertrude Jeanette (Balderson) Settle.

He graduated from District of Columbia High School. He also was a 1957 graduate of Strayer College School of Accounting. Carl worked for 30 years for National Credit Service. He bravely served his country in World War II as a Seaman 1st Class in the United States Navy.

Carl was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Community Church in Middletown, Maryland for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 11703.

Carl was an avid reader. He was also very active in his church, helping with various church functions. Most especially, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughters, Cathleen Delores Clark and husband, Leonard of Hagerstown, Maryland, Laurie Ann Biggs and husband, James Franklin of Kearneysville, West Virginia, and Joan Marie Moore and husband, Walter Douglas of Martinsburg, West Virginia; son Stephen Paul Settle and wife, Regina of Middletown, Maryland; sister June Brown and husband, Gene of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; brother Ronald Warner Settle and wife Mary of Hollywood, Maryland; grandchildren Bradley Christopher Biggs and wife Nicole, Natalie Suzanne Biggs and husband Peter Roca, Heather Lynne Settle, and Sarah Michelle Matthews; great-grandchildren Layla Cecilia Biggs, and Nina Rae Biggs; sister-in-laws Sister Alma Bernadette, and Mildred Stewart and husband, Gordon, and by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Carl is preceded in death by son Mark Edward Settle, who passed from this life in April of 1981; his sister-in-law Rose Anne Kowal and husband, Stan; and by his niece, Mary Kowal.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Holy Family Catholic Community Church, 7321 Burkittsville Road, Middletown. Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Jaskot will officiate. A reception will be held immediately following the Mass at the church.

Final resting place ceremonies will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 1:30 pm.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland.
