MSGT Carl Wesley Rihard (Ret.), age 78, of 17514 Shepherdstown Pike, Sharpsburg, MD, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore after a brief illness.
Born June 23, 1929 in LaCygne, Kansas, he was a son of the late Carl Alfred and Goldie Russell Rihard.
Carl retired in 1970 from the United States Air Force after serving 22 years. He had served in the Air Force Security Service, Ground Electronics Engineering Agency and the 6913th Radio Squadron Mobile, installing communication lines from the Congo to the Dew Line in Canada. His last installation was in Camron Bay Hospital, Vietnam. Carl had served tours of duty in Germany, Turkey, Philippines, Guam, Vietnam, Greenland, Labrador, Texas, Florida, Utah, New York and Pennsylvania. After leaving the Air Force, he was employed with C&P Telephone Co. until retiring in 1986.
Carl received a commendation from the city of Bremerhaven, Germany, for establishing its first youth basketball league in 1955. He was very active in sports and won the USAFE Germany Sports Conference 1963 All Events Bowling Championship.
Carl was a member of Antietam Post 236 American Legion in Sharpsburg and was a charter member of the Air Force Sergeants Association.
Carl is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline Drake Rihard; one son, Carl A. Rihard and wife Nancy of Hampstead, MD; three daughters, Nina A. Garrett and husband Gerald Morrow of Smithsburg, MD, Lisa A. Rihard and fianc� Michael Crist of Boonsboro; and Kerry A. Miller and husband Rodney of Keedysville, MD; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
A graveside service will be held 1 P.M. Saturday, July 14, at Fairview Cemetery in Keedysville. There will be no viewing or visitation.
