Carl Lauter

Carl Julian Lauter, 83, died on Tuesday, May 24th, 2016 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He was a resident at Buckingham’s Choice Retirement Community in Adamstown, Maryland.

Born in 1933 to the late Carl John Lauter and Florence Schott Lauter, he was a native of Washington, DC and received his education at Sidwell Friends School and the University of Rochester, NY. He spent the bulk of his over 42 years of government service at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD as an analytical biochemist. In 1968, he married Astrid Aarli of Norway and took a 17 month leave to work in a research laboratory at the University of Oslo, Norway. When the couple returned, they resided in Bethesda and Mr. Lauter resumed his work at the NIH. He and his wife did much traveling throughout the world, many on cruises.

Mr. Lauter was active in several community organizations and scientific societies, including over 55 years membership in the American Chemical Society. His interests became focused on the educational and advocacy efforts of the Chesapeake Chapter of the National Ataxia Foundation, in which he served as president for 14 years. In 2003 the Lauter Award was established in his honor, to be presented periodically to a member who has shown outstanding support and service to the Chapter.

He is survived by his loving wife, Astrid; a son, Carl Espen Lauter and his wife, Andrea; a daughter, Christine and her husband, Paul Wright; and two grand-daughters, Elizabeth Wright, 13, and Abigail Wright, 10.

Per his request, there will be no service or viewing. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the National Ataxia Foundation, ataxia.org/giving or the National Parkinson Foundation, www.parkinson.org.
