Calvin Miller Howes (Cal) , 83 of Crescent City, FL and Keymar, MD passed away on March 28, 2017.
Born June 22, 1933 in Laytonsville, MD, he was the son of the late Margaret Oland Howes and Calvin Howes Sr. Cal was predeceased by his sister, Betty Howes Wilson.
Cal leaves behind his constant companion and wife, June Howes and many friends. Cal grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Sherwood High School (’53) and entered the Marine Corps.
He taught dancing for Arthur Murray studio for 6 years and later taught classes in private homes until 1970 when he moved to Frederick.
He studied at Strayers University and provided a tax service for many small businesses in the Washington area. He later became a union carpenter and worked on many commercial sites in Washington.
Horses were a part of Cal’s life since he was young. Cal and June took groups on all-day trail rides and would help local children develop their interest in horses.
Cal loved his dog, Buddy, but most of all he just loved people. He was a stranger to no one.
He had a great respect for all veterans and expressed that whenever their paths met. He served as State Commandant of the Marine Corps League (MCL), Commander of American Legion Post 168, Thurmont, and Commander of Amvets Post 2, Frederick. He served on the National MCL Color Guard and carried the colors on Memorial Day and Veterans Day for over 11 years.
Cal loved country living and was a member of the Glade Valley Grange #417. After discontinuing farming, Cal and June spent their time in Frederick meeting friends and making new ones at the Golder Corral.
Cal’s infectious smile and the sparkle in his eyes will truly be missed by everyone who knew him and those who never had the opportunity really missed a gem.
A celebration of Cal’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 4:00 pm at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Md. Everyone is invited to remain for a memorial service, which will be performed by the Marine Corps League.
In lieu of flowers, Cal would like you to spend a day of enjoyment with a veteran, a best friend, renew a friendship or start a new one. Semper Fi
