Burman Smith

Burman Horine Smith, 93, of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Fahrney-Keedy Home & Village in Boonsboro.

Born on September 19, 1917 in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late George Washington and Nellie Blanche (Grams) Smith.  His wife, Margaret A. (Heller) Smith, preceded him in death.

Burman was a veteran of the United States Army having served as a Paratrooper and a member of the Glider Assault Team for the 17th and the 82nd Airborne Divisions in the European Theatre during World War II.  He fought in three campaigns during his time of service; the Ardennes Offensive, better known as the Battle of the Bulge; the Rhineland Campaign; and the Central Europe Campaign.  He was also the recipient of a Bronze Arrowhead.

Mr. Smith was a 35 year employee of the Western Maryland Railroad, having retired in 1977.

Burman was a member of the Fahrney-Keedy Chapel, the 17th Airborne Divison Association, the United Transportation Union, and was a distinguished 67 year member of the Clopper-Michael American Legion Post #10 in Boonsboro.

He is survived by his sister, Rosalie V. Long of Boonsboro; his brother, Drexel E. Smith of Hagerstown; and four grandchildren, Cathy M. Gorga, Jeffrey L. Smith, Robin D. Smith and Nelson W. Smith, II.  He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and his parents, Burman was preceded in death by his son, Nelson W. Smith; his sister, Edith L. Hines; and one grandson, Lonnie Smith.

The family invites Burman's friends to pay their respects at any time of convenience between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2011, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

A graveside ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2011 at the Boonsboro Cemetery.  Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate.
