BOYD HUME FUNK
Our wonderful husband, father and grandfather entered the kingdom of heaven at the age of 77 while surrounded by his family.
Boyd was married to the love of his life, Jean (Cline) Funk for 57 years. He was delighted to have 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Jean, son Ricky Funk and fiancée Jo Ann Spring, son Gary Funk and wife Chris, daughter Brenda Vanover and husband Billy. His grandchildren are Melissa Funk-Keller and husband Chris, Elizabeth Allamong and husband Jesse, David Funk and wife Sarah, and Seth Funk; great-grandchildren Nicholas Toms, Dillon Keller, Hallie Vanover, Gia Funk, Cameren Funk, Arabella Allamong, Benjamin Funk and Logan Funk. He was known as “Pappy” to his family, “Teets” to his siblings, “My Buddy” to his friends and “The Best Plumber Around” to his many loyal customers.
He was born in Frederick to Elmer and Ruth Funk on July 14, 1938. His family included brothers John “Buddy” Kline and Bernard Funk, and sisters Marcie Goldthorpe and Treen Null. He was predeceased by his sisters Evelyn Martin and Shirley Grossnickle. He attended Middletown High School and joined the U.S. Army immediately after his graduation in 1957.
Boyd was a valued employee of Glenn Waltz Plumbing for over 20 years. He started Boyd H Funk Plumbing Inc in 1980 and operated it successfully until his retirement in 2008 when his son Gary took over the business.
He was a cancer survivor for 17 years, participated in the Washington County Relay for Life and always walked the Survivor Lap. He was a lifetime member of the Middletown Amvets and a 40-year member of the Wolfsville Ruritan Club. He was a member of Harmony Church of the Brethren and faithfully attended all his life but greatly enjoyed attending Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren the last few years.
Boyd delighted in visiting and laughing with family and friends. He loved a car trip and was always ready to take his family to Ocean City, Disney World, Florida, Lake Raystown, Lancaster, New England, New York City, and other places where they would spend time together and eat great food. He never turned down an ice cream cone or a crab cake if he could help it. He had an excellent sense of humor and would write down any joke that made him laugh. Boyd affirmed his faith in God by reading devotionals and saying The Lord’s Prayer before bed every night. He loved listening to The Gaither’s gospel music and watching their Homecoming DVDs.
His family extends their gratitude to the doctors and nurses of FMH for their care and kindness, and especially to Dr. Kanan HudHud and the wonderful dedicated staff of Frederick Oncology.
The family will receive friends from 6-9pm Friday, April 8 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike.
Funeral service will be held 2pm Saturday April 9 at the funeral home with Pastor Rachel Black and Pastor Tracy Wiser officiating. Burial will be at Harmony Church of the Brethren.
