&nbspRet. Major General Boyd McCoy Cook, Sr., 78, of Old National Pike, Boonsboro, died Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Chambersburg Hospital.


Born January 5, 1930 in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Frances McCoy and Herman Wallace Cook, Sr.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Beatty Cook.


Mr. Cook was a 1948 graduate of Middletown High School in Middletown, DE. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1954 where he was co-captain of the lacrosse team.


Boyd, his father and brother operated their family farm in Delaware. He retired from Dairymen, Inc. after 38 years of service.


He served for 42 years in the United States Army and the Army National Guard and was also a graduate of the United States Army War College. He started his career in the Delaware National Guard in 1948. He was activated during the Korean War. Boyd transferred to the Maryland National Guard in 1959. As he rose through the ranks of Private to Major General, he commanded the Armories in Hagerstown and Frederick before moving to Headquarters in Pikesville. General Cook retired as Commander of the 29th Infantry (Light) headquartered at Ft. Belvoir. During his retirement, he has served as National Commander of the 29th Division Association, Commander of Post 78, Cresaps Rifles, and served for 6 years as Maryland Chair, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. General Cook was honored in 1994 by having the new National Guard Armory located near Ft. Ritchie named the "General Boyd M. Cook Armory". He has received numerous awards and decorations during his career including, Meritorious Service Medal, Maryland Meritorious Service Medal and the Maryland Distinguished Service Cross.

He was a senior warden and superintendent of Sunday school at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where he was a member for 50 years.


Boyd is survived by his wife, Virginia Phillips Cook, whom he married March 1997; daughters, Nancy C. Haines and husband, Allen, of Frederick, MD, Deborah C. Boyd and husband, David, of Maurertown, VA, Sandra F. Janowski and husband, John, of Middletown, DE and Caroline C. Gipe and husband, Rodney, of Frederick; son, Boyd M. "Chip", Cook, Jr. and wife, Sharon, of Boonsboro; step daughter, Nancy Rachlin of Livermore, CA; step sons, Richard Haberkorn and wife, Susan, of Hagerstown and Eric Haberkorn and wife, Mary, of Williamsport; grandchildren, Joshua, Adam and Sarah Cook, Laura Barrow and Christopher Flook, Ryan and Meagan Boyd, Kathryn and Kevin Kowal and Matthew and Rebecca Gipe; one step granddaughter, Carley Haberkorn; sister, Caroline C. Hisey; and brother, Herman W. "Hap" Cook, Jr. and wife, Martha all of Newark, DE.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 8 at St. John's Episcopal Church, S. Prospect Street, in Hagerstown. The Rev. Anne O. Weatherholt will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mark's Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.


The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro.
