Betty Wayland

July 27, 1925 — June 28, 2015

Betty T. Wayland of Lovettsville, VA passed away Sunday June 28, 2015. Betty was born July 27, 1925 in Greenup, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her husband Julian E. Wayland Jr., by her parents Marie and John Tong, her brothers John and Daniel Tong, and her granddaughter Hannah and Lydia Pote. She leaves behind her children Linda M. Pote, Mary K. Gordon, Julian E. Wayland 3rd, David B. Wayland, Rebecca E. Williams, grandchildren Karen L. Belshee, Craig M. Gordon, Jennifer A. Pote, Samuel W. Pote, Jacquelyn C. Williams, Rachel E. Cornett, Emily A. Carson, Bradley S. Carson, Lauren P. Cornett, Chad Williams and eight great-grandchildren.

Betty grew up in a small rural town in Greenup, KY. At 18 she left for Ypsilanti, Michigan where she served as a "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII. After the war, she moved to Washington D.C. and was an operator for ATT. It was in D.C. where she met and married her husband Julian on July 26, 1952. They left D.C. with two children in tow to Charlottesville VA, where Julian finished his business degree. They found that the city was no place to raise their children, so they bought an 86 acre farm in Lovettsville VA, where they raised their five rambunctious children and a menagerie of animals. While Julian taught at Loudoun Valley High School, Betty ran the day to day operation of the farm while trying to keep five children tightly reined in. Betty was a book lover, a great southern cook, a confidant, a peacemaker and friend to all. Her absence will leave a void in this world and she will be sorely missed.

The family will receive friends for viewing from 10:00am to 11:00am at the Stauffer funeral Home (1100 N Maple Ave, Brunswick, MD) at Brunswick, MD on July 8th, 2015. Funeral Services begin at the funeral home from 11:00am to 12:00noon. Interment followed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Lovettsville, VA. The reception will be after interment at Fox Hall, Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Lovettsville. Please come help us celebrate Betty Wayland’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Olivet UMC P.O. Box 66, Lovettsville, VA 20180.
