Betty Hammond Smith, 86, of Frederick and a resident of Homewood, passed away Monday, December 3, 2012 at Frederick Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Paul E Smith, who predeceased her in September of 2011.
She is also preceded in death by her three brothers, Bob, Dick, and Lenny Hammond and one sister, Frances Hammond.
Born October 28, 1926, she was the daughter of Harold Dorsey and Nina Smith Hammond.
She attended Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic Church. Betty was well known in this area for her beautiful, decorative arts painting. She was an avid gardener and a great cook and home decorator. She loved her family dearly and was known as Aunt Betty.
Being the last of her immediate family, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Hammond Carey and her husband Jerry Carey, and her three special nephews who thought of her as a second mother – Todd, Bradd, and Reidd Hammond. She is also survived by sister-in-laws Nancy Hammond, Evelyn Smith, and Virginia Hildebrand, and by nieces and nephews: Lisa Hammond Carnes, Robert Hammond, Cassandra Corridon, Dennis Smith, JoAnne Bonifield, Debbie Castle, Peggy Mooney, Jenny Williams, Leo Smith II, and Charlie Smith.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Sunday, December 9 from 2-4 and 7-9PM. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, December 10th at 1:00PM with Father Keith Boisvert officiating.
Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
