Born on November 12, 1928 in Roanoke, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Beulah Witt Schaffer.
Betty spent many years as a hard working mother; she owned her own business and worked for the large corporation now known as Verizon. She retired from Verizon in the early 1990’s. Retired life for Betty was anything but dull. She found her new free time fill when the Mt Airy Senior Center opened. In the center, Betty served as Vice President, and then President, of the Site Council. She was a member of the Bingo and Yard Sale committees. Betty was a very faithful Tuesday afternoon front desk volunteer and lunch participant. She greeted folks and helped them with obtaining information. She recently began teaching Mah Jongg on Wednesdays. On Thursdays she was found playing Pinochle, Mexican Train or other games with her friends. Betty loved reading books and magazines about pop culture. She loved a good joke! Betty was an integral part of the Mt Airy Senior and Community Center!
Outside the senior center Betty enjoy socializing with the Parade Lane Card Group, and the “Stewed Tomatoes”. She was a member of and enjoyed gathering with the Top of the Hill group, the 55+ club, the Mt Airy Women with Hattitude Red Hats and was an Eastern Star. Betty maintained close friendships with her many other long time friends.
Betty loved life. She was quick to laugh and quick with a come back. She never took herself too seriously. Betty was a strong, independent, fun loving person.
