Mrs. Betty Lou Miskell, 73, of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born September 4, 1939 in Lucketts, Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles H. and Laura J. Seymore Spurlock.
Mrs. Miskell was an active member of Gracehan Moravian Church where she served on the Caring Team, sang in the choir, and participated in Women's Fellowship. At the age of 55, Betty went back to school to become an LPN, after a career in office management. She worked at College View Nursing Center and at Heritage House of Virginia, in Stafford, prior to retirement. She was an active member of the Thurmont Senior Center. She sang with the Catoctin Canaries and played the character of "Minnie Pearl." Betty enjoyed reading, crafts, crossword puzzles, baking , flowers and gardening.
She is survived by her children Robert C. Gelwicks (Sonya) of Hagerstown, Thomas D. Gelwicks (Melissa Lewis) of Cascade, Rev. Betty Sue Koenig (Michael) of Thurmont and Tamara Dawn Bane (Carroll) of Walkersville, grandchildren Lindsay Tosten (James), Michaela Gelwicks, Randy Gelwicks, Carrie Gelwicks, Chelsea Gelwicks, Dustin Bane, Kara Bane, Thomas Koenig and Robert Koenig, great-grandchildren Nathaniel, Craig, and Tianna Tosten and Mason Nichols and DeSean Brown and special nephew Phil Schell. Many nieces, nephews and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Richard Spurlock, Paul E. Spurlock, Iva Jean Adema, Billy Ray Spurlock, Carol Sapp, Marvin Spurlock, and infants Genis and Harry Spurlock.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont on Friday, February 1, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 2, at the Graceham Moravian Church, 8231-A Rocky Ridge Road, Thurmont, Maryland.
Interment at a later date.
