Mrs. Betty L. (Sherald) Lawson, age 81
,
of Hagerstown, formerly of Frederick passed away on November 21, 2010 in the Washington County Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Lawson was born January 12, 1929 in Frederick, MD. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Gertrude Smith.
Mrs. Lawson is survived by one son Robert Sherald and his wife Terry of Waynesboro, PA, her stepson Eugene M. Lawson, Jr. and his partner Scott Sterl of McLean, VA, stepdaughters Juanita Feaster and her husband Terry of Burlington, NC, Debra Smelser and her husband Mark of Frederick, MD and one brother Kenneth Smith of Frederick, MD. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, two great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 13 years Charles A. Sherald, Sr. who died December 12, 1960, her husband of 33 years Eugene M. Lawson, Sr. who died June 27, 2009, her son Charles A. Sherald, Jr. who passed away on October 1, 2008, and one step grandson Dwayne Feaster of North Carolina.
Betty graduated from St. John’s Literary Institute in 1946. She worked as school crossing guard for St. John’s on the corner of 2
nd
Street and Chapel Alley. She worked in the laboratory of the Frederick Memorial Hospital and later as a receptionist for Microbiological Associates in Walkersville until such time as she left the work force and then volunteered for 23 years at the Citizen’s Nursing Home in Frederick.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, board games and working crossword puzzles. Before her husband Eugene’s death they enjoyed traveling in their motor home during the winter months. Most of their “snow birding” took place in Okeechobee, FL which they eventually called their winter home. While in Florida she was an active “Red Hatter” in her community. Their summer months were spent enjoying camping with the Monocacy Valley Chapter of the Good Sam Club and the Capital Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association.
Friends may call from 3-5 & 7-9pm on Tuesday November 23, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday November 24, in the funeral home chapel. Pastor Mark A. Hosler will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Pallbearers will be Robert Sherald, Timothy Sherald, Mark Smelser Sr., Mark Smelser Jr., Shane Robinson and Michael Wilkins.
