Betty Lee (Rhoderick) Bures, 88, of Braddock Heights, Maryland, passed from this life on Monday, February 6, 2023 at Homewood at Crumland Farms. She was the wife of Marvin Bures. They would have been married 65 years on February 8, 2023. Born on December 19, 1934, in Mt. Pleasant, MD, she was the daughter of John J. Rhoderick and Ella (Wagner) Rhoderick.
Betty was a graduate of Frederick High School. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maryland, College Park and received her Master’s Degree from Hood College.
Betty was a Howard County 4-H Agent, Washington County 4-H Agent, and Frederick County Home Economist Agent. She then served as a Regional Extension Director and State 4-H Leader, all for the University of Maryland Extension Office. Her work in the 4-H program was a great passion that inspired many youth during her years in Extension.
Betty was a proud Maryland 4-H All-Star. She also volunteered many years at Frederick Health Hospital and was a member of the Auxiliary.
Betty loved entertaining, hosting dinner parties, and many other family gatherings. She was a great cook and people often requested her recipes. She was fortunate to travel extensively in both the United States and many countries in Europe. Her Grandchildren, David and Samantha, were her pride and joy. She loved going to all sporting events and activities as their biggest fan. She also loved her Jack Russell Terrier Granddogs, Buster and Dexter. She was a proud resident of Maryland her whole life and an avid University of Maryland, College Park, Terrapins fan.
In addition to her Husband, Marvin, Betty is survived by her Daughter, Judy Schanuel, of Walkersville, Maryland; and Son, Greg Bures (Bonnie), of Geneva, Nebraska. She is also survived by Grandson, David Schanuel (Kate), of Potomac, Maryland; Granddaughter, Samantha Barlow (Shawn), of Germantown, Maryland; Jeremy Howard (Ashley) of Lincoln, Nebraska; Dannielle Beringer (Nate) of Moscow, Idaho; Kiefer Bures of Geneva, Nebraska; and Spencer Bures (Kearsten) of Geneva, Nebraska. Great Grandchildren include Jackson and Nicholas Schanuel; Mason and Cora Betty Barlow; and Maelee and Max Bures.
She is also survived by a Sister, Jeanette “Jo” Malphurs. She was predeceased by her Son, David Bures, four brothers and four sisters.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 18, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A celebration of Betty's life will take place on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of the funeral home. Friends and family may start gathering at 1:00 pm prior to the celebration. Reverend Tim May will officiate. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick at a later date.
