Bertha Naomi (Noni) Sigler, 88, of Brunswick, flew away on Sunday, January 28th, 2024, to join the choir of angels in Heaven.
Noni was born in Brunswick, MD, on November 13, 1935, to the late Eva and William Chaney. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Leoda Crabtree, Frannie Cooper, and Janette Cooper; her brother, Ralph Chaney; and her grandson, Tyler Sigler. Noni is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Sigler, Sr., and their six children: Diana Adcock (Pete), Thomas Sigler, Jr. (Cherie), Michael Sigler (Ann), Shawn Sigler (Gail Bunn), Bart Sigler (Lenore), Michele Sigler (James Schultz), her sister Eva Selwell (Andy), sixteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
Noni was a force to be reckoned with from an early age, and while she was known for her patience and kindness, she had a will and determination that were just as formidable. At fourteen, Naomi met Thomas Sigler, and at seventeen, she asked him to marry her. Together they built a home construction business, raised a large family, and were quite the dynamic duo with Noni, raising a family, keeping the books, and often lending a hand and cleaning up on Thomas’s job sites.
Throughout her life, she had a love of Christ, family, and music. You would often find her singing in the kitchen or in the garden, and on Sunday mornings, in one of the front pews at New York Hill United Methodist Church. Six kids in tow, early or late, it did not matter-church, family, and her love of Christ were foundations that grounded her and gave her strength throughout her entire life.
Always showing a strong desire for learning and education, in her late 30s, Noni started a new adventure and became a teller at Farmers & Mechanics National Bank in Brunswick. In her early fifties, she decided to go back to school and pursue courses in everything from psychology to mathematics. In her sixties, she decided to put her love of Christ at the forefront of her education and went to seminary to become a pastor. She achieved her goal, became Pastor Noni Sigler, and served as a pastor at Bakerton Methodist Church in WV. Noni retired from her full-time pastor position but was never able to sit still for long and became a visitation pastor with New Hope. Her sparkling blue eyes, wide smile, and warm personality always made one feel welcome. It did not seem to matter if it was in a bank, in a classroom, in her home, or in her congregation; you were welcomed with love and respect.
In her late seventies, she was diagnosed with dementia. That quick, easy laugh and warm spirit never faltered, even as her memory faded. As dementia claimed more and more of Noni’s mind, what we admired and loved about her stayed constant, even at the peak of her illness.
If you knew Noni at any point in the last 88 years, you have probably received a warm hug, a wink or a kiss, and a simple question: “Do you believe in Christ?" From the beginning to the end, she led a life full of joy and servitude to those around her.
You will be missed by many, our kind, brilliant, and inspirational mother. You are the best person we know!
