Bernard Marion Shankle passed on Monday, February 6, 2012.
Born on August 12, 1922, in Yellow Spring, he was the son of the late Dennis Merhl Shankle and Sadie Rice Shankle and the step-son of Marguerite Foland Shankle
Bernie served in the US Army in World War II and Korea. As a young man he worked at Knott & Geisbert in Urbana, and he retired from the US Government at Ft. Detrick where he was employed for over 30 years.
Bernie was a kind and gentle brother, father, father-in-law and grandfather. He was a gentleman of the highest order. Bernie was humble in his ways, and was always first to lend a helping hand. As a young boy until the end, Bernie had a keen interest in cars. He loved "piddling" in his basement, and could usually be found down there sewing, working with his homemade wines, or designing a part for his latest project. Every spring he began plans for his garden, and his age did not deter him from planting "many" tomatoes and vegetables for his family and friends.
He is survived by his son Philippe Shankle and daughter-in-law Tricia; his granddaughters Caroline and Ann Shankle, of whom he was so proud; his sisters Charlotte Roderick and Sharon Moscoso; his brother Carlie (Chris) Shankle; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 4-6PM.
Interment will be at the privacy of the family.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the American Heart Association P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen,VA 23058.
