Barbara Snow Zitlau
Barbara, age 79, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, November 27, 2017. She and her husband Paul lived in Newark, Delaware, before moving to New Market, MD in 2014.
She was a stay-at-home mom who loved her family and her church family. She faithfully attended every piano recital, swim meet, band concert, and graduation in which her children participated. Barbara was an active leader in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Newark, Delaware and for many years led a Bible study at the Newark Senior Citizen Center. She was also a homeroom mother, high school band booster, church counselor, and a volunteer guide at the Hagley Museum & Library for 22 years.
Paul and Barbara enjoyed being a host family for foreign students at the University of Delaware, several of whom became like family. These students came from countries including Israel, France, Spain, Japan, and the Netherlands.
Barbara was born in Waynesboro, VA, in 1938 and moved to Wilmington, DE in 1943 when her father was transferred by the DuPont Company. She always proudly considered herself a Delawarean. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1956 and from the University of Delaware in 1960 with a degree in French. After graduation she studied in Aix-en-Provence, France as a Fulbright Scholar. Upon returning to the US, she taught French and Spanish at Stanton Middle School until the birth of her first child.
In 1963 she married Paul Zitlau, who had moved from California to Delaware to work for the DuPont Company. They were married for 54 years. Barbara is survived by her husband, Paul; and their two married children, Kimberley Z. Cramer (George) and Warren A. Zitlau (Heather Gregg).
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2017 at the Stauffer Funeral Home in Mt. Airy, MD. Visitation will be during the preceding hour and a time of fellowship. Interment will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017, at All Saints Cemetery in Wilmington, DE.
