Barbara Alice MacDonald Liston was born on September 13, 1929 to Alice and Dr. Edward MacDonald, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. When Barbara was in high school, the family moved to post-war Germany. Her father served as Director of Education for US military families. Barbara had exciting tales of traveling the streets of Berlin immediately after the War. Her father served under four Presidents as director of American Forces education in various countries. Because of her father's career, the family moved often. Barbara attended high school in Germany and college in France.
Returning to the United States, she continued her education at LaSierra College in California and Washington Missionary College in Maryland. It was here she met a "tall, handsome" man from Texas. Dick Liston and Barbara MacDonald were married in an azalea garden in 1952. They were committed to God and each other, resulting in 58 years of shared adventure.
Barbara earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Education and enjoyed a 38 year career, teaching elementary school for the Montgomery County Public Schools. Barbara and Dick built their own house and moved the family into it. Later they moved to a farm near Mt. Airy, Md.
Barbara passed away peacefully after a full life and short illness, on September 16, 2023 at the age of 94. She is survived by two children, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Gifts in memory of Barbara may be made to West Salem SDA Misson School, www.westsalemission.org/donate or P.O. Box 626 West Salem, OH 44287.
