Barbara Ashbury

d. May 8, 2012

Mrs. Barbara Sibert Ashbury, 76, of Frederick, died May 8, 2012, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of M. Dunbar Ashbury, Jr.
Born March 25, 1936, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late L. Lewren and Anna Ruth Grove Sibert.
Mrs. Ashbury graduated from Frederick High School in 1954, where she played in the percussion section of the school’s Cadet Marching Band. She attended Hood College and took business courses at The Visitation Academy.
She was employed as a secretary in legal offices in both Frederick and Baltimore prior to the birth of her first child, at which time she “retired” to raise her family.
During her high school years and afterward, she sang in the choir at Calvary United Methodist Church, where she was married on June 21, 1957. She also sang in the choir of All Saints Episcopal Church for many years after returning to Frederick from Baltimore. In addition, she sang with the Frederick Chorale for years.
Of special interest to Mrs. Ashbury was the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, attending its performances in Hagerstown, and the Baltimore Symphony, whenever it played in Frederick or nearby, seldom missing a concert.
In 1994 she began her service as treasurer of the Episcopal Orphan House Scholarship Fund, in which capacity she remained until her death.
She took great pride in writing “Thank You” notes to all who contributed to the Memorial Fund of All Saints Church, and even during her last illness continued to do so. In addition, she was a member of St. Mary’s Chapter and the Outreach Committee of All Saints’ Church.
Mrs. Ashbury was a graceful woman with a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed her travels with her husband in the United States, Canada and Europe. She made friends easily and retained them for years.
She is survived by her husband, Dunbar, her children: Ann Ashbury Wendt and husband Terry, of Evans, GA; and Jill Ashbury Browning and husband John of Frederick. Her grandchildren also survive. They are: Terrence and Rodney Wendt, of Evans; and Caroline and Judson Browning, of Frederick.
Also surviving are two brothers: Philip L. Sibert and wife Hope of Dandridge TN; and L. Lewren Sibert, Jr., and wife Sharon of Tampa, FL. Numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family survive as well.
The Ashbury Family will receive friends and family from 2 to 4 P.M. and 7 to 9 P.M. Friday May 11, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, in Frederick.
Services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday May 12, at All Saints Episcopal Church, with the rector, the Rev. Thomas Momberg, officiating.
Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the Ashbury family requests that donations be made to the Music Fund of All Saints Episcopal Church, 106 West Church Street, Frederick MD 21701.
