Avice Smith

October 2, 1925 — July 21, 2011

Avice Catherine (Palmer) Smith, 85, formerly of Middletown, Maryland, passed from this life to the next on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Kline Hospice House in Mt. Airy, Maryland.

Born on October 2, 1925, in Myersville, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm Stanley and Mary (Remsburg) Palmer.  Her husband, Joseph Wessley Smith, preceded her in death on July 27, 1985.

She was a 1943 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

Avice was a retired employee of the Hanover Shoe Company in Middletown.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and also had attended Locust Valley Baptist Church, both in Middletown.

Avice is survived by her daughter, Mary J. Clemson and her husband Larry of Frederick, Maryland; her two sons, Joseph Allen Smith and his wife Debbie of Middletown and Mark W. Smith and his wife P.J. of Walkersville, Maryland; three sisters, Frances Blickenstaff of Boonsboro, Maryland and Rachael Shafer and Lorraine Funk, both of Middletown; and two brothers, Malcolm Palmer of Hagerstown, Maryland and Kenneth Palmer of Kensington, Maryland.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Avice was preceded in death by her daughter Rebecca E. Stotler; one sister, Sarah Long; and one brother, Amos Palmer.

A memorial service in celebration of Avice's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland. Rev. Richard Snyder will officiate.  Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will gather to receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the funeral home.
