Avance Smith, Jr.

Avance Smith, Jr. 77 of Frederick passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Avance Smith, Jr was born June 20, 1931 to Olivia and Avance Smith, Sr.
Avance was known to all his friends as Smitty.

As a young man, Smitty entered the military when he enlisted with the Army in 1950.
He had many assignments throughout his career but settled in as a satellite communications specialist at Fort Detrick, MD. He served dutifully in Vietnam and received a bronze medal. After suffering his first stroke in 1986, he received a medical discharge from the Army at the rank of Master Sergeant.

In his active years Smitty loved bowling, dancing, and photography; later he especially loved the horse races, the triple crown, and going to Charlestown whenever he got the chance.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Sonya Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory - son Daryl Smith, daughter Rhonda and son-in-law Keith Patterson, granddaughters - Imani Patterson and Joy Scott, grandsons - Parris Scott and wife Brandy, Keith Patterson Jr. and wife Tiana, Omari Patterson and wife Ashley, Akil Patterson, great-grandchildren Chris, Nadir, Rakim, Parris Scott Jr, Tobias, Angelina, Maya and a host of family and friends.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Friday, August 29 from 6:00-9:00 PM.

Services: A grave side service will be held on Saturday, August 30 at 3:00PM at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.
