Mr. Atlee Claude Virtz Compher, 95, was born July 11, 1916 in Frederick, Maryland, Son of Claude T. Compher and Vallie Virtz Compher, died April 3, 2012 in Frederick.
Educated in a two room school at Red Hill School off Ballenger Creek Pike, he graduated from Frederick High School, class of 1933. He was President of FFA in 1933-1934, was a member of Ballenger Boys 4H Club and was Club leader for several years in the 1930's. Atlee also managed the Ballenger All-Stars fast-pitch softball team during the late 30's. Atlee and his father operated a truck farm for many years. He was employed with Frederick Homes Insulating Company for 10 years where he worked for Harry Kester. He worked as a fireman on the B & O Railroad in Brunswick for 8 years after which time he was employed at NIH and AFRRI in Bethesda. After 18 1/2 years at AFRRI he retired in 1983. He retired again in 2003 after another 18 years with Environmental Servcies, associated with Eastalco.
An active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church 75 years, Atlee held many offices, including Council President, Treasurer, Secretary, Sunday School Teacher and President of the Manor Parish Churches. He was an honorary member of Carroll Manor Fire Company, working at carnivals and butchering and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARF).
He was predeceased by his parents Claude T. and Vallie V. Compher and by his brother Carl C. Compher; a granddaughter, Susan Jeanne Kester; great-grandson Jacob Tribett; son-in-law John C. Hope. He is survived by three sons and one daughter. Donna Jeanne Kester and husband Arthur G. Kester of Frederick, Atlee C.V. Compher II and wife MaryAnn of Hilton Head Island, SC, Gary D. Compher and wife Kathleen M. of Frederick; Kevin E. Compher and wife Donna S. of Berlin, MD. Also surviving are grandchildren Daniel S. Kester, Christina J. Compher, Vallie L. Compher, Theodore B. Compher, John W. Compher, Atlea M. Compher and Mollie E. Compher; great-grandchildren Matthew J. Kester, Tymber E. Compher Jeremy Whitfield, Shelby Jones, Emory Noelle Whitfield, David A. Compher, Alexandra M. Compher and Robbie Todd.
He is survived by his wife Virginia, the former Altha (Ginny) Virginia Bussard of Middletown, whom he married February 25, 1939.
He was an avid New York Yankees fan since 1925. He enjoyed gardening and had great love of animals.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 6 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 4004 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD. Pastor Marina Flores will officiate.
John Compher, Theodore Compher, Atlee Compher, Kevin Compher, Daniel Kester and Matthew Kester will be serving as pallbeareres. Ralph Bussard, Robery Fry, Jim Page and Bob Smith will be serving as honorary pallbearers.
Interment will be at Manor Cemetery, 4004 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD.
