Arthur Spangler

November 12, 1916 — July 7, 2011

Arthur Spangler, 94, who has been a resident at St. Catherine’s Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, MD, since June 2004, departed from his earthly life on July 7, 2011 to join his beloved wife, of 57 years, Marie Fogle Spangler, in the house of the Lord.

Born November 15, 1916 in Hanover, PA a son of the late Charles A ,
and Katie S. Willett Spangler.

Mr. Spangler's family moved to Thurmont in 1933 and started - the
Ea
g le Broom Works on Carroll Street Ext .. Mr. Spangler and his
father engaged i
n the manufacture of brooms until he was drafted
into the Army during World War II.

Mr. Spangler served in the 29th Div., 110th Field Artillery
Battalion from April, 1941 until he was shipped to England

October, 1942. He was then transferred to the 224th Field

Artillery of the 29th Division. He participated in the D Day
invasion of Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland, Germany.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster, American
Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service
Medal with Bronze Arrowhead. He was awarded an honorable discharge
July, 1945.

Upon returning home from the Army, he resumed the manufacturing
of brooms with his
, father, until his father’s death in 1959. He
continued the broom business until 1964. He was then employed

at Ft. Ritchie in the commissary, then to Ft. Detrick in the mail
room. He next was employed with the Frederick Post Office, from
which he retired in 1981.

Mr. Spangler was a devout member of Weller United Methodist
Church in Thurmont since 1933. He had served as Trustee,
Benevolence Treasurer, Sunday School Secretary, Head Usher, and

he participated in all activ i ties of the Sunday School and Church.

He was a member of The American Legion, Edwin C. Creager, Post #168
of Thurmont. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a

league bowler at the Thurmont Bowling Center and Thunderhead
Bowling Lanes in Taneytown. He did wood crafting as a hobby, and

o ok great pride in his vegetable and flower gardens. He also

had a great fondness for their cats.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mr. Spangler was preced e d in death by his brother, Ray W. Spangler.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont on Sunday, July 10, from

6-8:00 p.m. Services will be held Monday, July 11, at 11:00 am from the Weller United Methodist Church, 101 N. Altamont

Avenue, Thurmont with Pastor Richard Broome officiating.
