Arthur Wesley Andrews, Jr.

Wes Andrews, a retired microbiologist who had been active in Frederick, Maryland HIV/AIDS issues, died of Alzheimer’s disease on Sunday May 12, 2013 at Golden Living Center of Frederick, Maryland.

He was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on June 24, 1929. He was raised in New York City and was graduated from the Junior College of Connecticut and the University of  Bridgeport. He served in the Chemical Corps during the Korean War and was stationed at Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland. After his honorable discharge he worked for the Department of the Army at the Biological Laboratories at Fort Detrick.

He was later employed at the Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center    where he was the head of the Microbial Mutagenesis Screening Laboratory. He was a member of Sigma Xi, The Research Society of America; The Environmental Mutagen Society; The American Association for the Advancement of Science; and The American Association for Cancer Research. He was the author or co-author of 70 articles which appeared in many peer reviewed scientific journals and books.


He was an Advisory Board Member and Sunday Superintendent at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Braddock Heights, Maryland, taught Sunday school at All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick, was a President of the Yellow Springs Elementary School PTA, a member of the Board of Directors of the Fredericktowne Players, a volunteer with the Weinberg Center for the Arts, and one of the original members of the Frederick Poker Crew.

He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Sexual Minority Youth Outreach Program sponsored by the Frederick County Mental Health Association and the Maryland State AIDS Administration. He belonged to the HIV/AIDS Alliance of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. He was a founding member of the AIDS Team at Hospice of Frederick County where he was a facilitator, caregiver and buddy. He was the first president of Triangles. After his retirement he worked part-time for the Frederick County Health Department where he established the volunteer program and was a counselor in the HIV/AIDS Program.

Survivors include a daughter Stephanie Romano of Stratford, CT, and grandchildren Julia Soda and husband Thomas, and great grandson Jake in Derby, CT; a daughter Sydnye Andrews, and granddaughter Austin Brownell-Andrews of St. Augustine, FL; and a son Philip Andrews and wife Wendy in Clear Springs, MD and grandchildren Marci, Lisa, Edward and wife Brianna.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  Donations may be made to the Kline House Fund of Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702, in the memory of Josef Mickievicz.
