Arnold Tschantre Porter

November 5, 1919- June 29, 2019

Born in his parents’ home on Clifton Ave. in Northwest Baltimore. He had a very happy childhood which he often reminisced. Playing baseball, adventures in Druid Hill Park, sledding in Patterson Park, and ice skating on local ponds and streams. He delivered newspapers to neighbors and store owners and took flowers cut from his mother’s garden to his first love, his 2nd grade teacher. He was quite the jokester and always had one ready to share!

As an adult, he enjoyed golf, ice skating and teaching his three children to skate. It became a favorite family outing on cold winter days and evenings. Arnold also enjoyed writing poetry, several of which were published. He also sculpted from scrap metal making use of his welding skills and imagination. His favorite subject was trucks, dump trucks, steam rollers, tank trucks and pick-up trucks. They were proudly displayed in his home with love.

Arnold also loved deer hunting with his father and oldest brother on the Eastern Shore. It was the love and comrade that was paramount. A deer was never to be killed, although stories abounded recounting many near misses.

Arnold joined the Navy early in 1942 following the attack on Pearl Harbor. At first stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, he was later assigned to the destroyer the USS Neal A. Scott. He served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean destroying German submarines to protect larger US ships.

In 1945 he married his love, LaRue, on a leave in Tallahassee, Florida. They were married for 44 years and raised three children. He continued to live in the family home in Parkville, Maryland after his wife’s passing in 1988. He moved into Brightview Assisted Living in June, 2017.

The family will receive friends from 11-1pm on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd, Mt. Airy, MD 21771. A funeral service will begin at 1pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Locust Grove Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Mount Airy, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Operation Smile.
