Anthony (Tony) DeMatteo, Jr.

July 24, 1937 — January 16, 2016

Anthony DeMatteo, Jr. (Tony) of Frederick, MD, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2016.  He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Carolyn Lopez-DeMatteo; his sister, Rosemary McCarthy and husband William of Catskill, New York, nephews, Sean McCarthy of Coxsackie, New York and Kyle McCarthy, of Lee, MA.

Tony grew up in Ravena, New York, where he excelled in football, track and basketball.

He graduated from Davis and Elkins College (D&E) College in  Elkins, West Virginia in 1962 with a BS in Economics.  While attending D&E, he was active in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.  His allegiance to the Fraternity and his  "Brothers" was near and dear to his heart till the day he passed.

Tony was recruited to play football at D&E and played tight end, both offense and defense and was All Conference.  He also played Varsity Basketball.

He played football from 1958-1961.  In 1961, he was voted Captain of the team.  He received the WVICA 1960 and 1961 First Team NAIA Second Team; Little All American Defense Award.

On October 10, 2004, he was inducted into the D&E Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tony played Racquetball at the former Frederick Court Club and the Frederick YMCA.  He was an avid gym rat, but his biggest love in his later years was "chatting" up the ladies at the YMCA.

Tony was self-employed for 40 years in the Optical Business. For the last 20 years, he was a broker for Continental Optical Imports of Chicago, Illinois. He officially retired in December 2013.

His charming personality, and witty sense of humor, will be missed by all of those who were privileged to know him.

A private burial will be held at a later date in Upstate New York.
