Allen (Pops) Phelps, Sr., 80, of Emmitsburg passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 14, 2018 following an 18-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was the husband of Barbara Kauffman Phelps, his wife of 56 years.
Born on February 12, 1938 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Charles and Emily Phelps.
He served in the Air Force primarily in Morocco from 1959-1963, as an Airman Second Class, Fire Dept. Crew Chief. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. After serving his country, Allen was a Lieutenant with Johns Hopkins APL in the fire dept. After his retirement, he was a Frederick County school bus contractor for many years (Bus 82) and later worked at Van Sant Plumbing.
He was a volunteer fire fighter with Liberty Road in Randallstown and New Market.
He enjoyed being with his family for all events, holiday gatherings and many parties. He loved eating crabs, NASCAR #3 Dale Earnhardt, camping, dancing, and working on projects in the garage. As a young man, he enjoyed driving his 50 Chevy.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Karen Deal, Sharon Hamilton (Dougie), and Allen (Tank) Phelps, Jr.; grandsons, Rick Deal and wife Amber, Dougie Hamilton, Jr., Kevin Hamilton, and Michael Phelps; great-grandsons, Tony, Mason, and Jake Deal; sister, Elaine Jones and husband, Paul; brother, William M. Phelps; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends, including special family friends, Richard Deal, Sr., Ernie Ludwig Staub and Wayne Affeldt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Dougie Hamilton, Sr., and a brother, Charles Phelps.
Pops will be missed by his family, friends, and all of his furry friends.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 21, 2018 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 22 from the funeral home with the Rev. Heath Wilson officiating.
Interment will follow at Tom's Creek Cemetery.
