Allen D. "Granddad Sweetie" Ferreira, CMDR (Retired), 83, of Mt. Airy, Maryland, died Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Carroll Hospital Center.

Born March 13, 1933 in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Anthony J. and Louise H. Meybohm Ferreira. His beloved wife of 25 years, Patricia Logan Ferreira, preceded him in death.

He was a graduate of Sewanhaka Central High School Class of 1952. Having obtained a BS Degree from Adelphi College and a MS Degree from Adelphi University he then completed an MBA from American University in 1975.

Allen was retired from the United States Navy after 25 years of service having served in the Korean War, Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. His responsibilities included overseeing both medical ships, The Comfort and The Mercy, during the Gulf War. His commendations included but not limited to the Bronze Star, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal with Bronze Cluster.

Prior to his 27 year employment with the United States Federal Government as a Program Administrator, he worked as a microbiologist and assisted in the development of the contact lens. After his retirement from the government he was employed by the American Red Cross.

Allen was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the National Registry of Microbiologists, served on the Montgomery County Animal Matters Board, the National Reserve Association/Naval Order and the Military Officers Association of America. He was a nationally registered Emergency Medical Technician and obtained his pilot's license in 1977.

He loved traveling, science fiction, playing tennis and he had a corny sense of humor. Granddad Sweetie most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their many activities.

He is survived by his children, Lisa H. Freel and husband, Christopher of Frederick, Todd A. McKinney and wife, Elizabeth, of Jarrettsville, Maryland and Beth A. Incao of Keymar, Maryland; five grandchildren, Alexander and Joshua Freel, Jacob and Madelyn McKinney and Carlos Incao; brothers, Charles A. Ferreira and wife, Carolyn, of Ormond Beach, Florida, and George F. Ferreira of Hagerstown and a sister, Deborah A. Louise Ferreira of Walkersville, Maryland; and nieces and nephews.

Allen was preceded in death by a brother, James A.W. Ferreira.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, October 30th at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 703 West Patrick Street, Frederick with Rev. Dr. Eliezer Valentin-Castanon officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
