Alfred (Al) R. Thompson of Frederick, MD, passed away quietly on December 5, 2011 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Yvonne Clemson Thompson, whom he married on June 29, 1958.
Born February 26, 1932 in Frederick, he was the son of the late George R. Thompson and Helen Thompson Barber.
He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Elks Lodge #684, American Legion Post 11, and was a life member of the V.F.W. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Al spent most of his career in construction, both residential and commercial, and was superintendent of the building of Potomac Mills, at that time the largest shopping mall on the East Coast.
He retired from the Frederick County Department of Public Works, Construction Management Division.
He enjoyed being in his woodworking shop, building cabinets, countertops and furniture. He did that as long as he was able, creating beautiful pieces.
After retirement, Al was introduced to golf which he enjoyed playing with his V.F.W. friends. Most of all, he loved playing and teaching the game to his grandsons.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, A. Richard Thompson Jr. and wife, Becki, a son Michael S. Thompson and Brenda, grandchildren, Michael S. Thompson, Jr., Alfred Richard (Ricky) Thompson, III, Ryleigh Thompson, Kaitlyn Bucklin and a great-granddaughter, Ava Bucklin, a brother, John Thompson, a sister, Carol Bowers and husband, Bob, a step-brother, Harold Barber and wife Betty, a step-sister, Faye Mitchell and husband, Roy, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.
Al was predeceased by one brother, George (Tubby) Thompson.
A memorial service will be held at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Friday, December 9 th at 1:00PM were the family will be present to receive friends from 12:00-1:00PM. Services will be officiated with Pastor Clint Guthrie.
