Alfred Ranno

Alfred "Al" J. Ranno, 72, of New Market, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, November 8, 2014, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mt. Airy, Maryland, after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's Disease.

Born on January 23, 1942, in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Alfred M. and Mary F. (Demma) Ranno.

Mr. Ranno attended parochial schools in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Dematha High School in Hyattsville, MD.  He attended Montgomery College and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1966.

Al was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Rockville, MD, but in recent years has been unable to attend services.

In the late 1960s, Al began working in the Department of Defense in the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency, which became part of FEMA in 1981.  He was a program analyst and retired in 2003 after thirty-four years of dedicated Federal service.

Al enjoyed painting in oils and water colors.  Other interests included traveling across country, visiting National Parks.  He was also an avid Washington Redskins fan as well as a supporter of the University of Maryland men’s basketball team for many years.

Al is survived by his loving wife, Sandra V. Ranno, whom he married in 1968; his two sons, Paul  Ranno  and his wife, Danielle, of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. and Brad Ranno and his wife, Stephanie, of Baltimore, Maryland; and his five grandchildren, Noah, Sydney, Delaney, Colin, Emrys, and one on the way that is due in February.  He is also survived by his two sisters, Carmella Coleman and her husband, James, of Bethany Beach, Delaware. and Lucy Cory of Denton, Maryland.

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his aunt and uncle who raised him, Thelma and Anthony Demma.

A memorial mass will be held at a later day and time.
