Alexander S. Zdanov, 58, of Frederick, died peacefully on Wednesday May 19, 2010. He was the loving husband of Elena Zdanova for 32 years.

Born April 27, 1952, in Murmansk, Russia, he was the son of Sergey Zdanov and the late Sophia Zdanova.

Dr. Zdanov graduated from the Moscow State University with a Ph.D. in Physics. Having previously worked in Russia and Canada, he joined the National Cancer Institute in Frederick as a Staff Scientist. He devoted his life to science by studying the structures of proteins involved in cancer and other diseases. He was an editor or author of numerous scientific books and articles and traveled the world presenting his research at scientific conferences.

In addition to his father and wife, Alexander is survived by his son, Ivan Zdanov of Philadelphia, PA, daughter and son-in-law, Tatiana and Blaine Basom,  grandson Timothy Basom of Alexandria, VA and his brother Anatoley Zdanov.

Alexander was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He was a generous provider, always putting his family first.  He loved spending time outdoors, whether that was fishing, vacationing on the beach, or barbequing with friends and family.  He will be missed by many relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 12noon to 2p.m. and again from 6 to 7p.m. on Monday May 24 at the Stauffer Funeral Home P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. A short memorial service will begin at 7p.m.

Interment will take place at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
