Mrs. Adelheid “Heidi” Maleski, 88, died at her residence in Mt. Airy, on Thursday, January 16, 2014 of complications following brain cancer. She was the wife of Chester M. Maleski, who died on November 30, 2004. Heidi was born on May 11, 1925 in Oshersleben, Germany to the parents of Karl and Dorette (Bode) Bothmann. She was the youngest of 9 children. She was employed at the former Scholl’s Cafeteria in Washington, DC when she first immigrated to America. Later she was employed at Geico Insurance Company as an Underwriter. Her “dream” job was as the owner, with her husband, of the “Heidi’s Gift Shop” in Mt. Airy from 1980 to 2000 when they both retired. Many people will remember the wonderful atmosphere of joy, good conversation, and good will that were present there, along with the many interesting items sold at their shop. Heidi always enjoyed it when people came up to her and expressed their delight in seeing her and telling her how much they missed Chester and their shop. They were well-loved and respected by the community, and known for their honesty in dealing with their customers. Chester and Heidi attended St. John’s Catholic Church in Frederick, MD, and St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Poplar Springs, MD. Heidi is survived by one daughter, Barbara M. Fishell of Ijamsville, MD; a granddaughter, Regina A. O’Rourke, and her husband Evan; along with their children Brendan, Kaitlin, and McKenzie of New Market, MD; a step-grandson, John C. Fishell of Indiana; a stepson, Douglas M. Maleski, Sr. and his wife Jodi and children Douglas M. Maleski, Jr and his wife Saja stationed in Japan; Brandi and her husband David Donohue and family; A loving sister in Einbeck, Germany, Hedwig Helfrich, along with her children Ingrid and her husband Gerd Helfrich-Beraniak and family; Renate and her husband Gerhard Grundle and family; Peter and wife Marlene Myer; Loving nieces, Heti and husband Herbert Ehrich and family; Ingrid and her husband Keith Jenkins and family; Her nephew Carl and wife Sue Peiers and family; The Maleski and Hartman families of PA; along with many other loving nieces and nephews, and friends. The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 8 East Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy, MD 21771 on Wednesday, January 22nd from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 23, 11:00 AM, at St. Michaels Catholic Church, 1125 St. michaels Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771 followed by a luncheon at the church. Father Michael Ruane will officiate. Burial will commence at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD at 2:45 PM. Contributions may be made to Cancer Research of your choice.
