William "Bill" Crum

William Bruce “Bill” Crum, 87, of Walkersville, passed away on Monday, September 15, 2014. Born June 5, 1927 in Sunshine, MD, he was the son of late Bruce Elias and Frances Catherine Howes Crum. Bill married Barbara Diane Eaves on June 22, 1952 at the Walkersville United Methodist Church.
Bill graduated from Walkersville High School in the Class of 1944. He was President of the Alumni Association in 1980-1981.
He was a hardworking and dedicated husband and father. A dairy farmer for 37 years, Bill was a member of the Maryland/Virginia Milk Producers Association. After his retirement from dairy farming he continued to crop farm.
Bill was an active member of the Grange for 70 years and was a 7th degree member. He was also a member of the Walkersville United Methodist Church for 70 years, and was a member of the Farm Bureau for over 60 years. For many years he served in both local and state levels in the Republican Party and was voted Outstanding Young Republican in 1964. He was on the Maryland State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) committee in the 1970s. Bill worked at the Glade Valley Food Bank, as well as, at the Farm and Garden Building at the Great Frederick Fair for 20 years.
In 1976, he had the honor of hosting President Gerald Ford at his home during the presidential campaign where the president spoke with a group of farmers about their concerns and their hopes for the future of agriculture in America. In the late 1970s grandsons of the then French Ambassador spent two summers working on Bill’s farm learning about farm life in the United States.
In his retirement, Bill authored three books on Frederick County one-room schoolhouses. He was a 10-year member of the Frederick County Preservation Commission. A history buff, he was interested in and researched his family genealogy. He was especially interested in and was dedicated to preserving the National Register-listed Native American site located on his farm. Recently he received the Maryland Preservation Award for Preservation Partnerships for the 2013 Field Session in Maryland Archeology. His stories, humor and wit will be missed by all who knew him.
He was the proud father of five children, William B. Jr. and wife Atsuko, Barbara Ann Crum Barnette and husband, Fred, Mark Edward and wife Karen, Susan Marie Crum Culler and husband David and Mary Ann Crum Lantz and husband, Steve. All five children graduated from college. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren, Kevin, Kyle, Grayson and Danny Barnette, Matthew and Andy Culler and Evan Lantz; four step-grandchildren: Alyssa, Halden, Sem, and Tessa Brubaker; and six great grandchildren: Brody, Lillian, Abigail, Kolton, Lydia, and Ezra Barnette. He is also survived by his brother Clyde C. Crum and his wife Catherine, sister-in-law Nancy H. Crum, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter Jean Elizabeth, his grandson, Christopher Steven Lantz and brothers Robert Elias Crum and Roy David Crum.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home ,40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville on Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM. The funeral will be held on Friday, September 19 at 10AM at the Walkersville United Methodist Church, 22 Main St., Walkersville, MD. Pastor Richard Baker and Rev. Albert K. Lane will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Chris Lantz Memorial Fund, 77 West Pennington Street, Oakland, MD 21550. Inspired by Chris Lantz, the Memorial Fund established in his name is a charitable, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization which is dedicated to providing financial assistance to outstanding students by awarding college/university scholarships to the future leaders of our country.
