Robert Smith

July 27, 1944 — January 18, 2012

Mr. Robert E. Smith (Bob), of Walkersville Maryland, passed away
Wednesday January 18,2012 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born on July
27, 1944, Bob was the son of the late John Henry Smith Jr. and the late
Helen Butler Smith. In addition to his parents Bob was preceded in death by
a brother, Thomas W. Smith and two brothers in law, Russell Snowden and
Clabon Whittemore.
Bob attended Lincoln School in Frederick, until schools were
desegregated in 1957,then he attended school in Walkersville for the
remainder of junior high school and high school. He was an outstanding
athlete throughout high school. Bob went on to college at Morgan State
University where he earned his degree in education. Bob retired from a
successful 30 year career of teaching physical education at North Frederick
Elementary School in 1996. Bob devoted his life to working with children in
a variety of capacities. He coached many teams and was the first football
coach at Walkersville High.
Bob was president of the Noon Sertoma and received many awards
through that organization. He was also selected as a member of the Quynn
Hall of Fame and served on the selection committee for this annual event.
Bob loved all types of sports, hunting, fishing and he really enjoyed caring
for his stray cats. He was a diehard fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
Bob is survived by siblings John H. Smith III (Shirley), Alexandria
Virginia, Shirley Snowden, Walkersville, Gordon Smith, New Jersey and
Maria Whittemore, Frederick Maryland. Other surviving family members
include aunts Clara Butler (who he considered his second mom), Sarah
Butler and Dorothy Butler, sister in law Barbara Smith, nieces and nephews,
John H. Smith(Veronica), Christina Smith, William Snowden, Shirlisa
Snowden ,Zelda Campbell, Ramona Franklin , John Thomas Smith(Tracy),
Theresa Smith, Helen Clark(Berkley), extended family Pat and Butch Stockman, and a hosts of great nieces ,nephews  and cousins . Bob will also be remembered by Ronald Anderson, Liz,  and all of his friends at the Village Tavern in Walkersville.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 28, 2012 at
3:00 pm at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.  Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions may be made to the Walkersville High School Athletic Booster. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at the Frederick Cancer Center, Frederick Memorial Hospital and the Glade Valley Center for their care of Bob throughout his illness.
