Norman Alexander Powell, 74 of Frederick passed away peacefully on Saturday July 2, 2016 at Kline Hospice House after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. His loving wife of 24 years Elizabeth (Mickey) Powell was at his side.
Born on August 25, 1941 Norman was the son of the late Paulis and the late Minnie Powell. Norman grew up on a farm in Greene County, Virginia with nine siblings. He loved the outdoors and this led him to enjoy what became his life work.
Norman graduated from William Monroe High School in Stanardsville, VA. Shortly thereafter he began a job with the State of Virginia Survey Department. Norman joined Dewberry & Davis where he continued his survey career for over 30+ years. In 1997 he established his own company, N A Powell & Associates.
Norman loved to go to Estate auctions and flea markets. A member of Patina, MWTCA Mid-West Tool Collectors Association, Inc and Surveyors Historical Society his passion was collecting surveying equipment and woodworking tools. He was a life member of the Piedmont Stella Perfect Ashlar No. 50 Masons, A&A Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Shriners International.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his son Brian Powell and wife Crystal. Step daughters Rosemary Murphy (Lewis) and Melinda McCollum. Three beloved grandchildren Alexandra McCollum, Andrew McCollum and Oliver Powell. And one great grandson Jaxon Broadhurst.
He is also survived by nine siblings including five brothers Larry Powell (Emogene), Calvin Powell (Charlotte), Griffin Powell (Lillian), Merril Powell (Mary Ann) of Stanardsville, VA and Dr. Norris Powell (Wilma) of Zuni, VA. Four Sisters Patti Baugher, Audrey Morris (Ronald), Joann Powell of Stanardsville, VA and Janie Austin (Howard) of Staatsburg, NY. Norman was preceded in death by an infant brother Nelson Maynard Powell and a brother in law WL Baugher of Stanardsville, VA.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Wednesday July 6, from 2-4 and 6-8pm, where a Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel Thursday July 7, at 11:00 am with Rev. Tim May officiating.
