Madeline Kelly

Mrs. Madeline Anne Kelly, 88, of Union Bridge, passed away on Friday, February 5, 2016 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Sherman S. Kelly who died in 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Barto and her husband Jim, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; brother, John Rosso and his wife Piera; niece Andree Mowen and her husband Wally along with many great-nieces and great-nephews. Besides her parents, Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by brothers Joseph and Peter and his wife Aline.

Born Anna Maddalena Rosso on September 11, 1927 in Antibes, France, she was the daughter of Italian immigrants, Andrea and Antonina Giordana Rosso, and after enduring years of hardships during WWII, she came to America at the age of 21 to start a new life with her family. She immediately set about learning English and finding employment. One of the happiest days of her life was becoming an American citizen at which time she officially changed her name to Madeline Anne to better reflect her adopted country.

In 1957 she married a wonderful Irishman, Steve Kelly, and they welcomed a daughter, Patricia who later presented her with two lovely granddaughters, Carrie and Kellie. In time, Patricia married Jim Barto and added his two children to the growing family. Five great-grandchildren were born over the last 7 years. She loved her family and doted on her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and was a beautiful woman inside and out and was dearly loved. We will all miss her greatly.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM on Thursday, February 11, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike where funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 12, and interment will take place immediately after at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Gaithersburg.
