Mr. John Grayson Shelhorse, 85 of Frederick, Maryland passed away peacefully Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Citizens Care & Rehabilitation Center in Frederick.
Born March 31, 1927 in Jefferson, Maryland he was the son of the late Randy and Olive Shelhorse.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Frances Shelhorse.
Mr. Shelhorse served in the US Army from 1945-1946 and in the US Air force from 1947-1949.
He was an avid reader and Frederick History buff. He was a great story teller and enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge with anyone who would listen. He loved reading and reciting poetry. He was known to many as “The Icon”. He loved all kinds of music and new everything about any song. He also had large coin and knife collection.
In his early years he was in construction and later owned and operated numerous taverns and clubs in Frederick County. He opened Frederick’s first Pool Hall, The Golden Cue, in the l960's. He enjoyed playing pool throughout the years and also taught many how to play the game.
John was a member of the Frederick Moose Lodge, AMVETS, American Legion, Eagles Club and the VFW. He was also owner/operator of the local Owls club.
He is survived by his three children, Barbara Monath and son-in-law Bill of Frederick, Linda Renner and son-in-law Randy of Walkersville and John(Benny) Shelhorse and daughter-in-law Robin of Frederick, two stepchildren, Terry Kehne of Frederick and Ralph Kehne of Frederick, five grandchildren, Dawn Hopkins of Myersville, Tonya Beans and husband David of Sharpsburg, Dalis Albaugh and husband Nick of Frederick, Kristen Shelhorse and fiance Derek of Miller Beach, Indiana and Olivia Davis and husband Kevin of Taneytown, eight great grandchildren, Jordan Hopkins, Karly Hopkins, Matthew Beans, Emilee Beans, Kaileigh Davis, Cameron Davis, Casten Davis and Jaclyn Albaugh and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sister, Anne Grove of Frederick and brother, Bentley “Benny” Shelhorse of Richmond.
He will be greatly missed by his lifelong friends Bud and Delores Long and his friends and extended families from Allstar Billiards and at Citizens Care & Rehab Center.
In addition to his wife and parents he is preceded in death by his sisters Eleanor Stup, Nelly Meely and Jane Higgins also brothers Randy Shelhorse and James Beverly (J.B.) Shelhorse.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held on Friday, October 19th at 10:00AM at Stauffer Funeral Home 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick with Rev. Tim May officiating. The family will be present to receive friends on Friday from 9:30 am until service time at 10:00AM.
Interment will be private at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the local Diabetes Association or Kline Hospice House of Frederick County, MD.
