Helen Stoner Dettbarn, age 93, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016. She was a resident of Buckingham's Choice, Adamstown, MD.

Born September 8, 1922 in Woodsboro, MD, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Hazel Stoner.

She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Ernest A. Dettbarn whom she married June 26, 1948. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Dr. James Stoner.

Helen is survived by her sons, Ernie and wife Michele of Richmond, VA, Mark and wife Barbara of Bel Air, MD and daughter Jane Durant and husband MIke of Middletown, MD.

She is survived by seven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren as well as her sister, Kitty Zinkhan of Texas and sister in law, Liza Stoner of Frederick, MD.

Helen graduated from Frederick High School and went on to earn a degree in Home Economics from Western Maryland College. She taught home economics in Greenbelt and Towson, MD while her husband completed medical school. After he graduated, they moved to Frederick, MD where her husband set up his medical practice.

She and her family moved to Barcelona, Spain in 1955 when her husband was drafted into the Navy. They spent 18 months there before returning to the U.S. and moving to Walkersville, MD where her husband went into practice with her brother, Dr. James Stoner. Helen taught Home Economics at Walkersville High School until her retirement.

She was very involved in her community including PTA president at Walkersville High School, the Frederick Garden Club, Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick Cotillion and Glade United Church of Christ in Walkersville.

In 1980, Helen moved to New Jersey with her husband who had taken a position with the Army medical staff at Ft. Dix. She belonged to the Medford Lakes Country Club where she took up golf. She also belonged to the Medford Lakes Garden Club and Cathedral in the Woods church.

She and her husband retired to St. Michaels, MD. There, she was involved with the Garden Club, the Methodist and Episcopal churches and Harbortown Golf Club. Her husband passed away in 1994 but she remained in St. Michaels until 2015 when she moved to Buckingham's Choice.

Helen enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading and cooking. She also enjoyed playing golf and bridge with friends.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Buckingham's Choice for the compassion and care she received while living there.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to a charity of your choice.
