Edward Sanger

Edward West Sanger, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, died Friday, May 24 at the age of 92.
He was born December 3, 1920 in Brunswick, MD. into a loving family of one brother, George Sanger, and two sisters, Frances Pettingall and Mary Fisher, all who have predeceased him in death. His parents were Bessie Jane Merriman Sanger and Franklin Elexander Sanger.
After graduating from Brunswick High School, Edward enlisted in the army where he served from January 1943 to November 1945 in the US Army Ordinance Anti-aircraft Battalion, European Theater. After the war, he worked as Administrative Supply Officer at Fort Detrick, retiring in 1974. His interests were many and varied. For many years he owned and operated Grandpa’s Treasures, an antique store in New Market, which specialized in refinished furniture, clocks and lamps. Much of the furniture and many of the clocks were refurbished by him. Edward enjoyed inventing and has a patent for a hammer and one for a garden waterfall. At a point in his life, Ed owned several horses, which he raced at the CharlesTown racetrack. Until his arthritis ended his playing, he was an avid golfer and loved to tell about his 2 holes in one. He was a life long member of the VFW and the American Legion and was a member of the B.P.O.E. Calvary United Methodist Church was Ed’s church for 65 years, serving on the administrative board and serving as usher for many years with his 3 brothers-in-law.
Memories of Ed will be cherished by those who knew him. He will be remembered for his tremendous energy and “get er done” philosophy, for his inquisitiveness and interest in many subjects, for his love of the outdoors and gardening, for his patience and kindness, and most of all, for his sense of humor, which defined his personality. He was a Redskins fan, an independent thinker, and one who loved to debate.
Edward was married to Mignon Miller of Frederick for 42 years until her untimely death in 1984. Family members who are mourning his death are his only child, Constance Mignon Mason, and her husband, Robert L. Mason, Jr., their 3 children and spouses, Natalie and Timothy Gipson, Renee and Javier Vega, and Gregory and Amanda Mason, and his twelve great-grandchildren - Ellory, Carter and Camille Gipson; Mikaela, Ian, Luke and Carmen Vega; and Cassie, Ginny, Jonathan, Tess and Eva Mason. He was also loved by numerous nieces and nephews. Family was his most cherished possession. As the patriarch of the family, he was an inspiration to them as an example of one who faced challenges with steadfastness and a positive attitude. He faced growing old armed with dignity and his faith in God.
Also mourning his passing is Mrs. Betty Anderson, who has shared the last 8 years as a very special friend to Edward. Her care resulted in filling his final years with companionship and love.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. The celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 W. Second St., Frederick. Officiating will be the Rev. Harry C. Cole.
Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery immediately following services.
