Charles W. Hess, Sr., 88, of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2016, at his home.
Born on May 27, 1928, he was the son of the late Leonard Edgar and Emma Louella (Brick) Hess. He was the beloved husband of Patricia Ruggles Hess for 16 years.
Charles was a veteran of the United States Merchant Marines and the United States Navy. He was a member of the Boonsboro American Legion Post 10, the VFW Newton D. Baker Post 896 and a life member of Moose Lodge 120, both in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
He retired from the Schmidt Baking Company after 35 years of service.
Charles was a member of the Boonsboro Bible Church and St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Martinsburg. He was a contributor to St. Judes Children Research Hospital for many years. Charles enjoyed playing cards, bowling, preparing delicious meals and, above all, his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sorely missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Robin L. Robinson and husband, Edward, and Charles W. Hess, Jr. and wife, Karen, all of Martinsburg; step son, Art E. Ruggles and wife, Jane, of Andersonville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Chad E. Robinson, Joshua CR Robinson and wife, Amanda, CR Hess and wife, Jessica, and Justin L. Hess; step granddaughter, Erin Czarra; great-grandchildren, Bennett, Kaylynn, McClellen, Jaxson, Lyla and Kyler.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard E. Hess and a sister, Elsie Ruble; and his first wife, Marjorie J. Hess.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 4th, at the funeral home, with Pastor Allen Robinson and Chaplain Jeff Kasto officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant View Memory Gardens near Martinsburg, West Virginia.
