Caroline Mason

Caroline Jean Mason, 85, of Frederick, MD, and formerly of Silver Spring, MD, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2016.
Born February 22, 1931 in Harrisburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Francis W. and Caroline N. Smallwood Rutherford.
Caroline graduated from John Harris High School in Harrisburg in 1949 and the Susquehanna University in 1953. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in sociology, she was employed by Carroll County Children's Aid Society. In 1956, Caroline left the work force to raise her children. She became employed by Montgomery County Public Schools in 1969 working in food service. She continued to work in the school system in the special education field until her retirement in 1992.
Caroline was an avid reader. She loved nature, wild flowers and bird watching. She has a special place in her heart for her childhood farm in Harrisburg and Sugar Tree, her country property in the Catoctin Mountains. She had an especially close bond with her sister, Eleanor.
Surviving are her children, Michael S. Mason of Spencerville, MD, Carol M. Rothman of Silver Spring and Ann R. Carlson and husband, Barry, of Braddock Heights, MD; grandchildren, Joseph Mason, Elizabeth Mason, Elena Mason, Michael Mason, Tommy Mason, Ben Mason, Rachel Mason, Charles Rothman, David Rothman, Rebecca Lampe, Brian Carlson and Olivia Carlson; great-grandchildren, Dominic Huitz, Viljar Hellaland, Vincent Huitz, Isaac Huitz, Kathleen Dibble, Michael Dibble, Bradley Dibble and Alice Lampe; former husband and friend, Charles N. Mason.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John B. Rutherford and her sister, Eleanor S. Hivner.
Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick with Rev. Julian Tavenner officiating. Following services the family invites everyone for food and refreshments. Details will be announced at the memorial service.
